History

 In the spring of 1848, French gold miners arrived and camped in what would later be known as the Auburn ravine.  The area quickly expanded into a mining camp and was officially named Auburn in 1849.  Within a year the population grew to about 1,500 people and it was chosen as the seat of Placer County. Gold mining operations moved up the ravine to present-day Auburn. In 1865 the Central Pacific Railroad reached Auburn.  The restored homes and retail buildings attract many tourists.  The original fire station and post office date from the Gold Rush years.  The movie “Phenomenon” was filmed in 1996, right in the heart of Old Town at the local bar “The California Club”.  High school residents are also within Placer High’s boundaries.

Auburn is home to many different communities. These are the most desirable areas of  Auburn!

Lake of the Pines

Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Lake of the Pines is a gated residential community which surrounds a reservoir of the same name.  The reservoir was created by damming Magnolia Creek and was laid out by developers in the 1960s.  Residents of the association enjoy body contact water sports, fishing, golf, and tennis as well as other amenities.  The community boasts its own 19 hole golf course, club house, 8 parks and community pool. Residents and their guests enjoy many social activities including Music on The Lake, the yearly Easter Egg Hunt, 4^th of July parade and their very own fireworks show.  An additional perk of Lake of the Pines is the close proximity of all 3 levels of the public award winning schools and the Nevada County Library located on the Bear River High School campus.  Schools support strong athletic and art programs as well as advanced studies.

Dark Horse

Near Lake of the Pines in South Nevada County, Dark Horse houses 200 lots or homes in a non-gated community about 1600 feet above sea level.   It is surrounded by rolling hills, magnificent oak and pine trees scenic views of the Darkhorse Golf Course and nearby lakes.  Wildlife, including deer, bald eagles, turkey and quail abound. In 2006, Darkhorse chosen to be the site for a showcase tour of the Street of Dreams, featuring four premier luxury homes above the 17th fairway.

Deer Ridge

Since 2010, Auburn Deer Ridge has been gaining popularity with its low association fees.  Residents describe it as beautiful, dog friendly, well maintained, convenient and quiet. It is a smaller neighborhood located on the northern side of Auburn with just over 200 residents. High school students attend Placer High which was rated a 9 out of 10 based off test scores and parent input.  Placer High is known to excel in all areas, especially sports.
